The sight test

An eye examination is not just to correct and detect vision defects it is also an important check for the health of the eyes and often a window to general health. This is why regular checks are so important.

Sight tests would normally be carried out as follows:

  • Under 16 years of age - every year
  • 16 to 70 years of age - every 2 years
  • Diabetics - every year
  • Glaucoma sufferers - every year

It may be that in some cases these intervals are shorter especially with children or where we need to monitor problems. As Optometrists we find that young age or old age brings its own challenges.

For this reason we use the latest equipment to check our patients eyes including computerised image charts (which can show pictures as well as letters amongst other things) and a digital camera system to view and record eye problems. Elsewhere on our website you can view some images we have taken and used in the early detection of diseases such as glaucoma, diabetes, hypertension, age-related macular degeneration and others.

Vision by its very nature may deteriorate slowly but this latest technology allows us to monitor these changes, record them and act on them. A regular sight test can help maintain your most important sense and in some cases is a lifesaver.

An eye examination also covers other needs. For example as a driver can you be sure you can see a number plate at 20.5m, do you require special prescription lenses for use with a computer, are your safety glasses performing well? For more information visit www.college-optometrists.org.

Once the eye examination is complete you will receive professional advice on lens types and spectacle frames, and possible contact lense options.
